A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, March 28, with tremors felt across the country as well as in Thailand. The epicenter of the quake was near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city. The full extent of the damage is not known, but initial reports suggest more than 100 people have been killed and hundreds injured.

Our teams have experience in providing humanitarian aid after earthquakes, including directly from the affected Myanmar, where we brought medical aid and food to 300 thousand people after Cyclone Nargis. We were one of the few organizations able to bring aid and ensure its independent distribution in the country.
Martin Bandžák, director of MAGNA

Given the magnitude of the earthquake, the impact on people could be devastating, especially for those who need immediate life-saving assistance. We are also concerned for those who will be vulnerable after losing their homes, access to general healthcare, and basic necessities such as access to clean water.

MAGNA teams are ready to intervene and through our partners in the country we are currently identifying acute needs. It is only thanks to donors like you that we are able to respond quickly and effectively to disasters. If you can, please donate here and now.

MAGNA in Myanmar

MAGNA has been working in Myanmar since 2008, when the country was hit by the devastating Cyclone Nargis, which killed over 300,000 people. MAGNA was one of the few organizations that managed to reach the Irrawaddy Delta region directly.

MAGNA also launched a nutrition program and distribution of therapeutic food packages in the country in response to the extreme drought in the Magway region, where MAGNA teams conducted a rapid anthropometric measurement survey, which confirmed that almost 36% of children under 5 are malnourished, of which 12% are acutely malnourished.

Medical care in the country is inadequate. The military’s seizure of power in Myanmar in February 2021 has caused chaos in the public health system, jeopardizing access to healthcare for millions of people.
